Robust waste treatment process
Since December 2022, the ARCUS facility at the Höchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt has been recycling plastic waste in an innovative way—as Germany’s first commercial pyrolysis plant, it can process complex, heterogeneous plastic mixtures directly without the need for prior sorting or washing. Shredded, compacted, and pelletized, the plastics are broken down in a sophisticated pyrolysis reactor under heat and in an oxygen-free atmosphere into valuable pyrolysis oil, high-quality gas, and a small proportion of non-hazardous solids.
The plant is optimized for high pyrolysis oil yields and is characterized its innovative technological approach, offering exceptional flexibility regarding the feedstocks and a high process robustness. The resulting product gas is utilized directly in a gas engine , thereby covering virtually the entire energy requirement of the pyrolysis process.
Our technology closes the loop on plastic waste: The pyrolysis oil produced can be directly reused in the petrochemical industry, for example to produce new plastic —supporting an efficient, forward-looking circular economy.
